LUNAFEST is a traveling short film festival by…for…and about women. Each

Over the years, as LUNAFEST has grown from a single annual event to more than 140 festivals each season, LUNA’s commitment to this worthwhile program has grown as well. We are continually inspired by the individual and
collective efforts of women – and we are awed by the results. To date, LUNAFEST has raised over $470,000 for worthwhile women’s organizations, while raising hope and awareness for the stories of women everywhere.

LUNAFEST’s films have won industry awards and audience accolades, and the films selected for 2009-10 LUNAFEST season share this brilliance. From quirky animation to touching documentaries, the 10 selected films are incredibly diverse in both style and subject matter, united by a common thread of exceptional storytelling by…for…about women.

Childhaven is a nonprofit in Seattle that specifically works with children who come [...]]]> I am a bit late in sending this out but I am hosting a table for Childhaven, Thursday April 29 and would love to have you join me. The luncheon is awesome, huge, inspiring (I have been there the past 2 years).

Childhaven is a nonprofit in Seattle that specifically works with children who come from abuse and neglect. They have been doing this amazing work since 1909.

The specifics are below. The speaker is the real dad the movie, “The Blind Side” is based on.

It is $150 to attend, so I understand that this is a lot for many of us. Just happy to have a great group of friends to send this to, and grateful to any who can come. And the more the merrier. Friends are welcome!!

The Blind Side DVD has been released but because of the generosity of Warner Brothers, they have donated DVDs for our luncheon! Our keynote speaker will be Sean Tuohy, the real-life father depicted in the recent hit movie, The Blind Side. If you haven’t heard, the movie received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture! “Sean was an American success story: he had come from nothing and made himself rich,” wrote Michael Lewis in The Blind Side, the best-selling book that inspired the major motion picture starring Sandra Bullock, who won a Golden Globe for her performance and just received an Academy Award for Best Actress, andTim McGraw. The Blind Side tells the story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager turned first round draft pick NFL football player, with the support and love of an unlikely adoptive family: the Tuohys. Sean Tuohy, Michael’s adoptive father, was a record-breaking basketball player before becoming a successful entrepreneur and NBA broadcaster. “It’s easy to beat a kid up. The hard thing is to build him up,” Tuohy says. With that philosophy in mind, Tuohy and Leigh Anne brought Michael into their home, supported him through school, and eventually adopted him as their son. At the podium, Tuohy invites audiences to go behind-the-scenes of the Tuohy household with a heartwarming message: “In our house, we believe in miracles.” From the perspective of a dedicated father and inspirational coach, Tuohy asks all of us to consider a simple question: how many other kids just like Michael Oherare falling through the cracks every day?

We are pleased to announce that Scott & Linda Carson will be receiving the Reverend Mark Matthews Service to Children Award at the luncheon. This Award, named for the founder of Seattle Day Nursery, recognizes their outstanding commitment to not only Childhaven but to their unwavering dedication to enhancing the lives of children in our community. Scott, former President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and Linda have been long time supporters of Childhaven and will be present at the luncheon to receive this award.

We have 22 program sites in King County and we are looking for volunteer coaches to facilitate our curriculum at all sites.

Organization Description

Girls on the Run of Puget Sound is a non-profit organization whose mission is to use the power of running to educate and prepare preteen girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Since 2002, we have operated an after-school prevention program for 3rd to 5th grade girls at sites in the Puget Sound region. In 2009, we served over 250 girls at 13 sites, and involved more than 300 adult volunteers. Volunteering Coaching*

We are looking for volunteer coaches for our spring 2010 season! Our coaches guide a group of 8 to 15 participants through an easy-to-follow, well researched curriculum that uses active running games to teach healthy lifestyle lessons and train the participants for a non-competitive 5k race at the end of the session. Together, explore topics like body image, media awareness, nutrition, emotional health, and positive communication!
